This year the Grand Départ of the Tour de France takes place in Düsseldorf, Germany. Practically right around the corner. So, why not use the chance and head there to soak in the atmosphere of the spectacle.
Arriving at the Burgplatz, where a stage has been set up, an already sizable crowd had gathered. Therefor, I headed for a slightly quieter space directly at the Rhine river. Squeezed in between a group of Dutchmen and a group of Brits, I waited for the riders to pass by. Meanwhile the British kept everyone entertained with their chanting.
Peter Sagan stuck to his rock star image as he drifted around the corner, while the German riders clearly enjoyed the familiar faces and the cheers they received from their home crowd. But now, let the racing begin!
